Ingredients

  • 2 family-size tea bags preferably a brand like Luzianne or Lipton for that authentic Southern taste
  • 1 to 1 ½ cups of granulated sugar adjust according to your sweetness preference
  • 1 gallon of water
  • Fresh mint leaves optional, for garnish
  • Lemon slices optional, for serving

Instructions

Step 1: Brew The Tea

  • In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil.
  • After turning off the heat, add the tea bags to the pot. Steep for 5-7 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.
  • Remove the tea bags, ensuring not to squeeze them, which can make the tea bitter.

Step 2: Sweeten The Tea

  • While the tea is still warm, add 1 to 1 ½ cups of granulated sugar. Stir until all of the sugar has dissolved.
  • This step is crucial for achieving the smooth, sweet taste characteristic of Southern sweet tea.

Step 3: Dilute And Chill

  • Add the sweetened tea to a gallon-sized pitcher.
  • Fill the remainder of the pitcher with cold water, adjusting the amount to taste.
  • Refrigerate until chilled, about 1-2 hours.

Step 4: Serve

  • Serve the sweet tea over ice.
  • Garnish with fresh mint leaves or lemon slices, if desired.
