Ingredients
2
family-size tea bags
preferably a brand like Luzianne or Lipton for that authentic Southern taste
1 to 1 ½
cups
of granulated sugar
adjust according to your sweetness preference
1
gallon
of water
Fresh mint leaves
optional, for garnish
Lemon slices
optional, for serving
Instructions
Step 1: Brew The Tea
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil.
After turning off the heat, add the tea bags to the pot. Steep for 5-7 minutes, depending on how strong you like your tea.
Remove the tea bags, ensuring not to squeeze them, which can make the tea bitter.
Step 2: Sweeten The Tea
While the tea is still warm, add 1 to 1 ½ cups of granulated sugar. Stir until all of the sugar has dissolved.
This step is crucial for achieving the smooth, sweet taste characteristic of Southern sweet tea.
Step 3: Dilute And Chill
Add the sweetened tea to a gallon-sized pitcher.
Fill the remainder of the pitcher with cold water, adjusting the amount to taste.
Refrigerate until chilled, about 1-2 hours.
Step 4: Serve
Serve the sweet tea over ice.
Garnish with fresh mint leaves or lemon slices, if desired.
